While at a debate Thursday night, U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga compared Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive orders to Japanese internment orders.

During the debate, the candidates were asked about how they felt Governor Whitmer handled the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It's a little like when FDR decided to throw all Japanese citizens into internment camps to keep everybody safe,” replied Huizenga. “How you can excuse that action just because you feel like it was the right thing to do is no excuse.”

Huizenga's opponent, Rev. Bryan Berghoef, remarked favorably toward the governor's response, saying she "has done everything in her power to protect lives and livelihoods."
