Since many of us are at home and our cars are just sitting in the driveway, one big question for our viewers has been auto insurance discounts.
So we looked at what’s being offered and what to do if you’re not getting a fair shake.
Carol wrote to us on Facebook that she hasn’t seen any change in her policy with a refund or credit and several more of you said the same.
Janet Peppler runs an independent insurance agency in Harper Woods, she writes policies for several companies like Citizen’s, Progressive and Safeco.
So, we asked, what is the industry doing to help their clients?
“As the insurance company started reviewing this drastically, they wanted to give back and do what they could on their part,” said Janet Peppler.
“They’re gonna give back a percentage of two months of premium,” said Peppler.
Almost every major carrier has reported a discount, so call and see what yours offers. If they’re not offering you a deal ---then it’s your job to ask that they do.
Thinking about dropping your policy all together? You may want to think twice.
“If you remove a car, you lose the multi-car discount and if you needed to drive it in an emergency, you couldn’t,” said Peppler.
In the end, the downsized coverage could actually hurt your point system that fees are based on so it’s not worth it for now.
Instead, if you’re having problems paying, reach out to the billing department.
"Hey, I don’t have any money, I may have a check in 3 weeks, can you pen my date for something, companies are being very, very understanding of that," said Peppler.
“They are not sending any non-payment notices, they’re not canceling any policies, they’re waiving late fees,” said Peppler.
