There have been 14 coronavirus outbreaks reported at schools in Michigan this month, according to the state.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services confirmed to 7 Action News the outbreaks at both K-12 schools and universities in the state. A spokesperson for the department said they are gathering case counts in schools.
Those outbreaks were not identified, and only the regions were given. 10 of the 14 outbreaks were in metro Detroit.
The total outbreaks are below.
- 8 in Region 2 South, which includes Monroe, Washtenaw and Wayne counties
- 2 in Region 2 North, which includes Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair counties
- 1 in Region 1, which includes Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Hillsdale, Ingham, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston and Shiawassee counties
- 3 in Region 3, which includes Alcona, Arenac, Bay, Genesee, Gladwin, Huron, Iosco, Lapeer, Midland, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Saginaw, Sanilac and Tuscola counties
The state did say they plan to publish outbreak data in the future on the state's coronavirus website, and it will include outbreaks in schools.
“Health departments will work closely with schools to make sure anyone who is at risk of exposure is notified and the proper procedures are in place,” Sutfin said. “Parents whose children are at risk would always be notified.”
