LANSING, Mich. — As the country looks to rebound you may be wondering, is more help on the way from Congress? There's talk of more stimulus money and our political reporter Joe St. George looks at three of the mostly likely scenarios that could help with your job security or to help you make ends meet. The country looks to rebound. You may be wondering is more on the way from Congress?
There is a good chance if you lost a job during this health crisis that stimulus check is probably already spent. The senate is back for the first time in weeks this week but so are the politics and it seems whatever comes next is won't come as easy as before.
Usually in an election year Congress doesn't take on much meaningful legislation. It's about campaigning and reelection. But in a pandemic Congress is no longer a lame duck. This week limited lawmaking returns with the signs of the new normal. Quite literally all around the capitol.
So what is Congress thinking of doing next? Bailout for City and State Governments? How would this help you? Well, cities around the country are struggling, layoffs anticipated with Tax revenue drying up.
In Dayton, Ohio, 470 employees furloughed. San Jose, California, 1200 employee furloughs. Boulder, Colorado, 700 employees furloughed
The mayor of Boulder Sam Weaver wants Congress to help his city but it was too small and it hasn’t qualified for any aid yet. As he explained "Our budget is going to be very impacted by this, we are very sales tax dependent. We think we are going to be about 40 million short."
As for a city or state assistance, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called for a trillion-dollar bailout. Republican leader Mitch McConnell though has expressed early skepticism and so has the President.
Big Idea #2
More Small Business loans? Money ran out for loans the first time in just 13 days. There are calls from some in congress to give more, but so far no specifics or direction from the White House.
And finally Big Idea #3
Another stimulus check? Some Democrats have suggested a $2000 dollar check should be issued. The President has said though that won’t happen with unless he gets a payroll tax cut which many on the left do not like.
One other big idea, give some businesses protections from lawsuits related to COVID-19. So as you can see politics is back. And by the way, to pass a bill Congress needs to have the House and Senate in session. And this week the House isn’t back yet. In fact some health experts are warning its still unsafe for them to return.
