The team also called up Isaac Paredes and Tarik Skubal, with GM Al Avila saying Skubal will start Tuesday's game.
It comes as Ivan Nova was placed on the 10-day injured list with triceps tendinitis.
In 21 minor league starts last season in Lakeland and Erie, Mize went 8-3 with a 2.55 ERA, 106 strikeouts and 23 walks. The team shut him down in August.
