Lions coaching carousel update: Johnson hired by Bears, Glenn hired by Jets

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Update on Wednesday, Jan. 22: The New York Jets have reportedly hired Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as the team's new head coach.

Also, DL coach Terrell Williams has left to be the defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.

Update on Tuesday, Jan. 21: The Chicago Bears are finalizing a deal for Ben Johnson to be their next head coach, as first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Johnson isn't the only coach to leave the Lions this off-season, with defensive line coach Terrell Williamsleaving to become the New England Patriots defensive coordinator, per an ESPN report.

Per Zack Rosenblatt with The Athletic and Dan Graziano with ESPN, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is the only coaching candidate slated for a second interview.

The Lions could potentially lose another coach as well. Per Graziano, offensive line coach Hank Fraley is set for a second interview to potentially become the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks.

Teams that aren't in the postseason like the Lions are working towards improving for next season.

As reports trickle in throughout this month, we will be updating this article with the teams interested in interviewing these two coaches. The running list is below, in chronological order:

  • Per Jordan Schultz with Fox Sports, Ben Johnson is set to interview with the New England Patriots and the Las Vegas Raiders this Friday and the Chicago Bears and the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday. Per NFL policy, the interviews have to be virtual, since it's happening before the divisional round is completed.

  • The New Orleans Saints and the New York Jets are expected to request head coaching interviews for Aaron Glenn, per ESPN's Adam Schefter
  • The Chicago Bears have formally requested to interview both Johnson and Glenn for their head coaching vacancy, per Dianna Russini with The Athletic.
