The first varsity golf match of a high school career can be intimidating.
"I did not know what to expect," Otsego freshman golf Stephanie Scott said. "I had the butterflies in my stomach and everything."
Scott was playing against rival Plainwell on Monday as the Bulldogs and Trojans each played their entire teams because there is no junior varsity schedule due to COVID-19.
"I try to get out to watch all my freshman for their first shots just because I know they are nervous," Otsego golf coach Matt Rayman said. "When I got out to Stephanie she was getting ready to hit."
Because of the larger number of golfers it was a shotgun start with Scott beginning on the par three eighth hole at Lake Doster Golf Club which is the home course for both Otsego and Plainwell.
"I hit a seven iron," Scott said. "It felt so good to hit that in the hole."
A hole-in-one on the very first swing of her high school career!
"She one-hopped it into the hole for a hole-in-one," Rayman said. "Pretty exciting stuff. Good coaching."
"I just thought I had a pretty good spot to putt at," Scott said. "I didn't think it went in."
The pin was tucked behind the bunker for Monday's match making it difficult to see the ball go in.
"I found out because there was some parents down there and they were like 'it went in, it went in,' they were yelling back at us," Scott said.
"I didn't know what to do. I was standing back at the tee box and my coach came down and hugged me and congratulating me, it felt so surreal."
Scott said she just started taking the game seriously this summer.
She shot a nine hole score of 53 which is her personal best.
"I hope I can keep my score in the 50's," Scott said. "And maybe even lower."
Since Monday's big moment, Scott has been at the center of a lot of attention.
"My phone has been blowing up by a lot people I normally don't even talk to," Scott said. "So that is all I've noticed is a lot of people congratulating me."
