LANSING, Mich. — White avoided the sweep with a 5-4 win Tuesday in the third and final game of Michigan State baseball’s annual Green-White World Series at McLane Stadium, wrapping up the Spartans’ fall action with a seven-inning contest.
Sophomore infielder Peter Ahn filled the scorebook with twos tallying two hits, two RBI and two runs to boost White at the plate. Freshman infielder Dillon Kark notched two hits of his own, while senior infielder/outfielder Andrew Morrow blasted a solo home run and sophomore catcher Scott Combs added a double and a run scored.
On the mound for White, senior Danny Gieselman went 3.0 innings, ringing up four strikeouts while scattering four hits in yielding two runs. Fellow senior Caleb Sleeman went 2.0 IP with three punchouts, while redshirt-freshman William Christopersen went 1.0 IP with one K, and senior Sam Benschoter pitched the final inning to earn the save.
Green was led by junior catcher Adam Proctor with a pair of extra-base hits with a home run and a double, driving in three RBI and scoring two runs. Fellow junior, infielder Zach Iverson added two hits, rapping a double and drawing a walk, along with two runs scored. Freshman outfielder Jack Frank tallied two hits and an RBI.
Junior Mason Erla started on the mound and notched two strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Senior Jarrett Olson went 1.1 IP in relief without a run and senior Zac Bianucci came on in relief and got a big out without a run.
Green got on the board with two runs in the top of the first, as Iverson laced a one-out double followed by Proctor blasting a two-run round-tripper.
White countered with a three-run third, boosted by a one-out single by junior outfielder Danny Gleaves, followed by a Combs double to put two on. Ahn followed with a single and moved up on the throw. He later stole second and was plated by an RBI single from senior outfielder Bryce Kelley.
Morrow’s solo blast came in the bottom of the fourth and gave White a 4-2 lead.
Green tied it in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs, as Iverson sparked the rally by drawing a one-out walk. Proctor drove Iverson in with a double, and following an error, Frank singled to drive in Proctor and level the score at 4-all.
White regained the lead in the home half of the fifth as Ahn led off with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch. The White pitching staff kept Green at bay to secure the victory and salvage the win to avoid the sweep and wrap up the Spartans’ fall action.
