It's pretty safe to say that most of the people at Spartan stadium Saturday won't be rooting for Purdue, but they will be rooting for a Purdue fan who's fighting cancer for a third time.
Tyler Trent's story has touched people across the nation, including in Mid-Michigan. One MSU alum knew a small act and two words from fans would mean a lot to the Purdue student.
Despite significant pain, super-fan Trent mustered the strength to watch in person as his beloved Boilermakers beat Ohio State last weekend. Before kickoffs, fans held signs stating, "#TylerStrong' and yelled out, "Cancer Sucks!"
Matt Sheehan saw what they did and wanted the Spartan community to rally behind Trent too.
"With all of the strength that he's showing, it's only fair that we give him that support back," Sheehan said.
At Saturday's game, Sheehan wants fans to chant 'Cancer Sucks!' at kickoffs to make Trent and other fighters feel at home.
"Even small acts like this, even two words like cancer sucks can really bring light into the world. Help people out with their battles that they're fighting too."
Trent's story even went national, appearing on ESPN. Angelos Bairactaris, a senior at MSU watched the story on his phone.
"It's just a great struggle. The guy is overcoming a crazy amount of adversity and for him to maintain the positive outlook that he has, it's inspirational for everybody," Bairactaris said.
It's positivity everyone can get behind.
"This is just another way of showing us that hey, even though we're going against your Purdue team, Tyler, we still love you and we're definitely behind you," Sheehan said.
FOX 47 News reached out to Trent and he said that this is really selfless of everyone to do. It always brings him encouragement and joy when people raise awareness for pediatric cancer research
