EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State guard Joshua Langford has had a setback in his return from a foot injury, and coach Tom Izzo says the senior will be re-evaluated in January.
Langford played only 13 games last season, averaging 15 points. Izzo said Tuesday a problem had surfaced with the same foot. Izzo described the current issue as a stress reaction and said Langford had missed practice time.
"It is so tough because he's always been on time, he's never missed a practice and he's never missed a trip. He's upbeat to our other players and it is really tough, frankly it just breaks my hear," Izzo said.
Izzo was clearly emotional about Langford's injury. He described Monday as a day of highs and lows.
The Spartans were ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP poll for the first time, then Izzo found out about Langford later in the day.
In addition to Langford, Izzo also said Tuesday that veteran guard Kyle Ahrens has a sprained knee and he will be out for about a week.
The NCAA has denied immediate eligibility for Marquette-transfer Joey Hauser, who has been practicing all fall.
Michigan State will appeal the Hauser decision.
There is some good news for the Spartans, however.
Point-guard Cassius Winston was named to the Associated Press Pre-Season All-American team, and was the only unanimous choice.
