The suspect in a robbery at MSU's East McDonel Hall last week has been arraigned.

Tyrese King is charged with two counts of armed robbery as well as home invasion and using a firearm to commit a felony.

The 18-year old is from Detroit and MSU police say he has no affiliation with the University.

But King was able to walk into McDonel hall because the doors are not locked until midnight. Since this robbery some students are on alert.

"Like I don't ever want to leave my door unlock cause I'd rather be safe than sorry," said sophomore Carolyn Bussineau.

She is now hyper aware of her surroundings and always on alert, since the incident.

"I always make sure like I pay attention when someone is walking behind me," Bussineau said. "I'd be aware, yeah, and I'd be cautious. I wouldn't let any one slip in behind me."

Police say Tyrese King walked into McDonel with a small pistol and robbed a student. King had the same access into the building as any other student because all exterior doors don't lock until midnight.

"Classrooms are integrated within the residence halls and that's wonderfully convenient for many students," said Housing Communications Director, Kat Cooper.

Since there are classrooms in the dorms, the doors can't always be locked, "they can live and learn in the same building. But that also means the public needs the access to those public spaces," said Cooper.

The university is looking at how to keep their students safe.

"We have MSU Police embedded throughout our residences halls. They have offices in the residences halls," Cooper said. "They eat in our dining halls. They have a large presences to all our halls everyday."

Along with officers in the dorms, students still have access to green light telephones with two on each floor.

"MSU is overall a very safe place to be, but it's only as safe as it can be when we all work together," Cooper said.

Wit hall of these steps, Carolyn Bussineau hopes campus will feel a little safer.
