EAST LANSING, Mich. — College football season will begin in less than a month and the Spartans were out on the field Thursday for the first, official day of practice.

Michigan States home opener is set for Aug. 30 for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Tulsa.

USA Today came out with their coaches poll on Thursday and MSU is ranked 20th, but that equates to fourth in their own division.

Ohio State University came in at 5, Michigan came in at 7 and Penn State at 14. These are just pre-season rankings and the Spartans aren't paying too much attention to it, they have plenty of confidence heading into the season.

"Especially on defense that's one thing we pride ourselves on is being a confident and loud defense. So we don't lose that regardless and then we focus on the things we can and need to get better at and improve on those things. We know last year wasn't good enough and we can improve a lot so focusing on those things in camp is what we're going to do," David Dowell, MSU Safety said.

MSU will also Western Michigan and Arizona State this season.

MSU will play against the Wolverines on Nov. 16.
