LANSING, Mich. — A story of Vietnam told by women who served, opens at Riverwalk Theatre.
So often war stories are told from the perspective of a soldier, memoirs from the battlefield or the struggles men face when they return home; rarely is a woman more than a supporting character. Shirley Lauro’s A Piece of My Heart changes that and puts women front and center as they recount the Vietnam war as they lived it. Based on actual experiences, the play takes us through the memories of six women before, during, and after their tour in the war torn country. Director Diane Cooke has assembled a powerhouse cast of women to bring this emotional drama to the Dart Black Box stage: Kelly Jo Garland, Anasti Her, Jessa Bye, Brie Roper, and Ann Glenn Carlson portray Red Cross nurses; Caila Conklin flexes her musical background as a country western singer tricked into touring the country; and Tyler Frease portrays all the male
characters.
