HILLSDALE, Mich. — Through a collaborative effort, American 1 Credit Union and several Hillsdale community partners provided a Financial Reality Fair for seniors from Hillsdale County high schools on Tuesday, March 10. This is the second year for this collaborative event.

With support from the Michigan Credit Union Foundation, the Financial Reality Fair simulated financial decisions and barriers students might face throughout their life. Students moved through 10 stations where they made choices on housing, transportation, food, leisure, and even pets. This year brought a new tool to the experience - an app used to create obstacles that impacted students’ budgets, like a flat tire. After visiting the stations, students attempted to create a balanced budget, and some were even able to put extra cash into savings.

“We are thrilled to be part of this event for the second year in a row,” said Janelle Merritt, Vice President of Community Partnerships at American 1. “American 1 believes in creating financial wellness in our communities, and what better way to do that than giving students hands-on practice at real-life budgeting. By learning healthy budgeting and strong savings practices now, these students will be equipped and empowered for adulthood.”

The event consisted of two sessions, just under two hours each, at Jackson College’s LeTarte Center in Hillsdale. The Financial Reality Fair was made possible by the Michigan Credit Union League, Jackson College, American 1 Credit Union, Hillsdale Career Center, Hillsdale County Intermediate School District, Hillsdale County Career Access Planning, and the Hillsdale County School Counselors.

Established in 1950, American 1 Credit Union today serves over 57,000 members with branches in Jackson, Washtenaw, Hillsdale, Calhoun, Lenawee, and Wayne counties. American 1 is proud to serve the members of their communities by creating financial wellness through personal everyday banking.
