LANSING, Mich. — Lansing Community College will conclude its yearlong commemoration of the 400 Years of African American History Commission Act with a spectacular event of live performances at
5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3 at Dart Auditorium, 500 N. Capitol Avenue on the Downtown Campus.
The performances for the celebration will feature African drummers, dancers, and steppers; musical tributes, a children’s choir, theatrical skits, video highlights, and poetic expressions.
LCC began its yearlong commemoration on February 28, 2019, with a kickoff event that included the unveiling of a Malcolm X portrait that has been permanently installed in the Gannon Building. The college was thrilled to have Malcolm’s niece, Deborah Jones on hand for the dedication.
The year has seen a variety of events designed to educate, commemorate and celebrate the role African Americans have played in our nation. There was an art exhibit from the Mott Warsh Collection, Celebrating a Cultural Heritage; a Women’s History Makers Luncheon; MLK Day of Service; Student Summit on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; Black Business Expo & Entrepreneur Pitch Competition; Arts, Artists and Advocates lecture series, and the finale, Trials, Triumphs and Trailblazers, an inspirational concert and African American History storytelling event.
“This yearlong commemoration has brought the LCC community and the Lansing community together in a unique and powerful way. We have met our goal of building better relationships through education,” said LCC’s chief diversity officer Dr. Tonya Bailey. “There is still work to be done but LCC has opened the dialogue that will help move the community forward.”
Trials, Triumphs and Trailblazers will begin with registration and a reception at 5 p.m. and the program will begin promptly at 5:45 p.m. For more information and to register visit www.lcc.edu/400years [lcc.edu].
