LANSING, Mich. — Lansing Community College will hold its 61st Commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, with renowned civil rights activist Dr. Robert L. Green giving this year’s address. The ceremony will be held at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center on the campus of Michigan State University.
Dr. Green came to prominence while working as the education director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in the mid-1960s under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and former United Nations ambassador and Dr. King confidant, Andrew Young.
His latest book, “At the Crossroads of Fear and Freedom: The Fight for Social and Educational Justice,” focuses on his academic work nationally and internationally and his involvement with the civil rights movement. Dr. Green has dedicated his life to helping others deal with fear, a lesson he learned personally from Dr. King. In 2018, he received The King Center’s “Christine King Farris Legacy of Service” award.
He has successfully related his writing and research to solving society's most pressing social, political, economic and racial issues. His research and practice have focused on the impact of poverty and discrimination on urban, minority populations. He is a national and international expert on expectations and how they affect student achievement.
Dr. Green holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from MSU and a B.A. and M.A. from San Francisco State College. He is the former President of the University of the District of Columbia and former Dean of the College of Urban Development at MSU. Currently, he is Dean and Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Alumni of MSU.
