LANSING, Mich. — Lansing Community College will join the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation tribute to firefighters who died in the line of duty. We will light the Granger Clock Tower on the Downtown Campus and the tower at West Campus red in honor of some of America’s bravest heroes.
As dusk turns to dark, Oct. 3-5, LCC landmarks will glow red in respect of fallen firefighters and their families. We will especially remember the father of Tim Baker LCC’s Program Director for Public Service Careers, which includes our Fire Science program. Tim’s dad, Timothy Norris Baker died in the line of duty in 1986 as a firefighter for the Department of Energy Nevada – Nevada Test Site. He also served as fire chief of the Sand Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Irish Hills Fire Station in Tipton, Mich., and as a firefighter in the U.S. Air Force.
“I am very proud that LCC is participating in this national tribute to honor fallen firefighters,” Baker said. “It has been so important to me to stress safety to all the new recruits in all our programs at LCC. This is a fitting tribute for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and we pay homage for their dedication, determination and service to community, and we vow that they will never be forgotten.”
The college will also remember LCC Fire Science Academy graduate and distinguished U.S. Marine Corps veteran Dennis Rodeman. He served as a volunteer firefighter with the Vermontville Fire Department until he joined the Lansing Fire Department as a firefighter/EMT in 2007. His life was cut short in 2015 after he was intentionally struck by a passing motorist while participating in the Fill the Boot fundraising campaign, where firefighters collect donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
