Police patrolling for bus stop safety

Posted

Local departments will be patrolling Tuesday to make sure cars stop for school buses.

While many districts in the area asked the state to start school before Labor Day, students in Lansing and Holt will be jumping on the bus for the first time this morning.

This marks a big day for Lansing police and other departments who are saying the bus is the safest way for your child to get to school.

Local departments will be patrolling Tuesday to make sure cars stop for school buses. The price for not stopping could be steep, around a $400 ticket and potentially putting a child's life at risk.

"Kids are unpredictable. They make unpredictable decision," Lt. Mark Wrigglesworth of Eaton County Sheriff's Department. "Specifically in their teenage years, they, a lot of times, are wearing dark clothing. They're staring at their cell phones. They may have their ear buds in so they can't hear."

According to a report, the afternoon hours are actually most dangers. Data shows over the last 10 years, nearly one third of child pedestrian fatalities happened between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
