LANSING, Mich. — Lansing Christian School (LCS) strives to help our students engage in real work that meets real needs, for real people by providing formational learning experiences that put purpose behind what students are learning day to day. One way our sixth grade students are doing this is by learning about the experiences of refugees in mid-Michigan. As part of that learning, students are partnering with the Refugee Development Center and Sheridan Road School to bring a traveling art exhibit called Refuge Lansing to LCS.
Sixth graders at Lansing Christian School are hosting the Refuge Lansing Exhibit on Saturday, February 29 from 2:30-4pm. Refuge Lansing is a traveling exhibition overseen by the Lansing Refugee Development Center, which includes stories and photos celebrating refugees that have settled in the mid-Michigan area. Students have been working hard to put this event together and advertise it to the broader community.
In addition to the Refuge Lansing Exhibit pieces, the exhibition will include portraits of refugee students from Sheridan Road painted by Lansing Christian School High School art students. Sixth grade social studies students have also written a narrative story to accompany each painting. The profiles with be read at the event on Saturday at 3:00, and the portraits will be presented to the students from Sheridan Road.
Creating additional work to be included in the exhibit has given LCS students the opportunity to learn firsthand about the experiences of students their own age who have recently settled in the area as refugees, and to use the power of art and storytelling to reflect the beauty of diversity.
