OKEMOS, Mich. — NexTech Lansing High School is providing students with summer learning options to help them gain credits, acquire new skills and prevent the summer slide.

Summer learning helps students avoid the summer slide, a decline in academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school isn’t in session. The secret to preventing the summer slide is to keep the learning going all year long.

“Summer learning programs keep kids’ academic skills sharp throughout the summer,” said Jamie DeWitt, principal of NexTech Lansing. “Our creative models of summer education have realistic expectations for student success, and will benefit students during their time at school and beyond.”

Summer learning is often considered a punishment, “but in reality is an excellent opportunity for students to get ahead in their academic careers,” said DeWitt. “Students can get a head start on credits or free up class periods for courses that have limited availability during the regular school year.”

There are three types of 2019 summer learning offered by NexTech Lansing including content recovery, full course credits and summer math skills.

Content recovery allows students to recover content they missed during the school year. Current students will have their course in Odysseyware opened and will have three weeks to finish uncompleted assignments, each with their own individual plan based on the course they need to finish.

Full course completion allows students to take a full course completely online with instructors from Michigan Virtual. Students are assigned an online mentor to monitor their progress, and will earn a letter grade for their online courses. This grade will be reflected on the students’ high school transcripts and figured into their GPA.

Summer math skills provides students with a resource that can help prepare them for math in the upcoming school year. NexTech offers a fully online program called EdReady, which is tailored to the skills each student needs and the course they would like to prepare for. Subjects offered include eighth grade math, Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2.

For EdReady students request a “study path,” which consists of various goals. In each goal, students take a small test to test their knowledge and progress. The goal is then broken down into these small parts, where students can learn at their own pace and make their math skills stronger.
