LANSING, Mich. — Over 3,000 residents of Reading Pennsylvania were interviewed by Lynn Nottage as research for Sweat, at a time when Reading had been dubbed one of the poorest cities in America. While the action takes place in both 2000 and 2008, it doesn’t feel so different from 2019.
The middle class is dissolving and manufacturing jobs are being shipped to Mexico where the labor is cheap and the union isn’t watching.
Directed by George Popovich, this might be the most timely and relevant production Riverwalk has done in a long time, “Every audience member will have experienced first-hand or will know someone who has been affected by the forces depicted in Sweat which are the most pertinent issues of today-the loss of manufacturing jobs, the erosion of the middle class, race, and the opioid crisis.” Popovich’s ensemble consists of eight familiar faces to Lansing stages: Lekeathon Wilson and Connor Kelly play lifelong friends Chris and Jason, who have just been released from prison. Maureen Sawdon, Rose Jangmi Cooper and Madeline Nash in the roles of line workers Tracey, Cynthia and Jessie, whose friendship is tested against economic and racial lines.
Scott Pohl, Eddie Heldt, and Julian Van Dyke round out the cast.
We do give this production an ‘R’ rating for violence, language and sexual situations
