LANSING, Mich. — Social work students at Michigan State University have started a new registered student organization on campus to highlight the lack of student needs regarding hunger, homelessness, and other basic needs individuals take for granted.
The MSU School of Social Work, Kids Turning Corners, and Student Advocates for Basic Needs Security would like to invite you to join students, faculty, as well as Senator Stephanie Chang, Representative Julie Brixie, and Senator Curtis Hertel Jr. in a conversation highlighting the ways to create equitable access to education and educational needs for all students at colleges and universities across Michigan.
Across the country today there is an increasing focus on barriers that students face in relation to affording a quality college education. Affordable housing, food, hygiene items, childcare, and access to medical care are all components key to learning. The chances that a student will be successful in class when they are sleeping on a friend's couch or are hungry are slim. No student should be forced to choose between food, hygiene items, or higher education.
Generally, students of color and those with families living in poverty are affected the most by a lack of basic needs and resources. Most institutions of higher learning have a fundamental mission that focuses on student success. Many institutions fall short of that mission because they fail to focus on systemic basic needs support.
An important part of action is creating meaningful and sustainable change in the life of students. We are raising money for the student scholarships, which will be awarded to students nominated by faculty of four MSU community support programs. The nominated students will be proven leaders who work hard for the needs of their peers in a variety of campus capacities.
We are accepting tax deductible donations at: http://www.kidsturningcorners.com/contribute[kidsturningcorners.com].
This event will also host student scholarship presentations, a Campus Champion (Faculty) award, a networking and resource fair, and a moderated panel with essential legislators to guide reform.
