LANSING, Mich. — As we commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 3D breast mammography is now available at Sparrow’s four Community Hospitals – Sparrow Carson, Clinton, Eaton and Ionia.
3D mammography is performed the same way as a conventional 2D mammogram, with no additional compression, but it’s more accurate. By providing three-dimensional images of the breast, Doctors are able to examine breast tissue layer by layer, finding 30-40 percent more invasive breast cancers than conventional mammograms. Using 3D, fine details are more visible and less likely to be hidden by other tissue. It’s also more suitable for those with dense breast tissue.
Greater accuracy means better breast cancer detection and a reduced chance of additional screenings. That’s important because one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime and eight of nine diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history.
