LANSING, Mich. — A Sparrow Clinton Hospital Nurse’s treatment of a special Patient helped earn him a DAISY Award for exceptional nursing skills.
Chad Piggott, RN, received praise from Beth Daugherty, recently named Acting Hospital Administrative Officer at Sparrow Clinton Hospital. Piggott took care of Daugherty during her first visit to an emergency room as a Patient.
“I am familiar with emergency rooms, but have never been admitted as a Patient,” said Daugherty, who most recently served as Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at the hospital. “Chad’s first question to me was ‘Are you comfortable with me taking care of you?’ My response was ‘Are you comfortable taking care of me?’ I knew his concern for me was heartfelt.”
She commended Piggott’s empathetic, reassuring, and compassionate disposition, saying he provided the very best of care.
Piggott, who joined the Sparrow Clinton Hospital family in 2011 as a Patient Care Technician, earned his nursing degree in 2014.
“Chad is a true, unsung hero,” added Diane Simon, RN, BSN, and SCH Emergency Services Manager. “He gives 110 percent as a caring professional.”
Daugherty, RN, BSN, MPH, CRRN, joined DAISY Committee Nurses in presenting Piggott with the award, a certificate of recognition, a DAISY pin, and a hand-carved sculpture entitled The Healer’s Touch. In addition, a DAISY Foundation banner signed by Piggott and previous DAISY Award winners will be posted in the hospital.
“Our DAISY Award nominees personify the remarkable Patient experience at Sparrow Clinton Hospital,” said Daugherty. “All our Nurses provide extraordinary, skilled care with great compassion every day. I may be biased, but Chad is a fine example of the kind of quality nursing care that earned this hospital our Pathway to Excellence designation.”
Also recognized were DAISY Nurse nominees Sally Batis, BSN, RN; Wendy Embs, BSN, RN, CEN; Sarah Fabus, BSN, RN: Jean Fedewa, RN, CNOR; Brandi Gruesbeck, RN; Jodie Hills, BSN, RN; Melanie Kotowicz, BSN, RN, CNOR; Teresa Miller, RN; Connie Phelps, RN, CNOR; Amber Piper, RN; Sarah Veith, BSN, RN; Aubree Verlinde, BSN, RN; and Bridget Willis, RN. Each nominee received a DAISY pin and flowers.
The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate and skillful care given by Nurses every day. Nurses are nominated for the award by their Patients and Patients’ families.
Sparrow Clinton Hospital honors two Nurses each year as DAISY Award winners. In addition, a DAISY Team Award is presented as recognition if merited.
