LANSING, Mich. — Sparrow has achieved redesignation as a Magnet® Nursing Hospital, placing it among an elite group nationwide that have the highest level of nursing excellence.
This recognition, announced Monday by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®, is the nation’s most prestigious honor for nursing achievement and is considered the “gold standard” for nursing care in hospitals.
“Today we celebrate our status as Magnet Nurse hospital for the third time. Sparrow Nurses are the only Nurses in Mid-Michigan to be Magnet-recognized and among only percent of those nationwide. It is high praise and well deserved,” said Sparrow Hospital President and Chief Nursing Officer Alan Vierling.
“While Magnet is a Nursing designation, it is more importantly a statement about Sparrow as an organization, an organization dedicated to our Patients and community, an organization where exceptional care happens every day. I could not be more proud to be part of this group of outstanding professionals.”
Vierling, a longtime Nurse, noted that “Being a Nurse is an honor and a gift. We are the most respected profession in the nation. We are our Patients’ advocate and lifeline, and give without asking for anything in return. For us, Nursing is more than a job, it is a calling.”
Sparrow was originally designated as a Magnet hospital in 2009 and its ongoing commitment to clinical and service excellence helped meet the stringent redesignation standards.
According to the ANCC, research indicates Magnet hospitals are more likely to be associated with improved “nurse-sensitive indicators,” such as a lower rate of Patient falls. More positive environments, like those found at Magnet hospitals, are associated with higher Patient satisfaction with communications with Nurses, among other issues.
