LANSING, Mich. — It’s National Volunteer Week and Sparrow wants to recognize the many Volunteers who founded our hospital and continue to provide quality, compassionate care every day.
One youth Volunteer, Haslett High School senior Dev Acharya, will be honored Saturday with the Congressional Medal Award-Silver for service, initiative, and achievement. Dev began volunteering at the Sparrow Surgical Lounge in 2015 and has amassed more than 250 hours of Volunteer time. He’s just one of hundreds of Mid-Michigan residents who selflessly give their time to benefit our Patients and their families.
“Sparrow has more than 2,000 Volunteers who serve to improve the Patient care experience, from giving their time to support family members, providing direct Patient care, and many behind-the-scenes activities that include sewing, operating our gift shops, and working within offices and departments,” said Melissa Sherry, Director of Sparrow Volunteer Services.
It was a Volunteer group known as the Women’s Hospital Association, an organization that continues to thrive today, that founded Sparrow in 1896. Much has changed over the past 123 years, but Volunteers continue to be a crucial part of Sparrow’s mission to improve the health of the mid-Michigan region.
